I’m getting ready to travel over the holidays to a remote island. I know there will be plenty of opportunities to eat, drink and be merry. Routine will be broken for sure. The kids will stay up late and nap little. My husband and I will be in a foreign country without our usual running routes, gym dates or food selections.
Goal: come back in better functional shape than I am now.
How to quantify that goal needs to be specific and measurable. I want to beat my current best time for completing one of my favorite body weight circuits. Here’s my strategy.
- Have family members lined up each morning for childcare (ahead of time!)
- 730a Su/T/TH/Sa Body weight circuit with my favorite all-in-one
- 700a M/W/F Cardio: 3-5 miles of intervals
- eat lots of fresh fish for lunch and dinner with veggies
- breakfast every morning: 2 eggs and oatmeal and fruit
- say “yes” to food I want to try, but only 3 bites of sweets.
This is my strategy. Yours can be different. The point is to get a strategy in place. You will find greater success if you implement one that will be practical and reasonable for your goals. You won’t feel guilty 10 days later or if you indulge in a second Christmas cooking along the way if you have a strategy to navigate the festivities. The payoff – you will enter the new year feeling powerful and in control of your fitness!
Best of Energy!
Ashley
